The Edit menu is very disappointing, missing even things that Windows Explorer has. The menus are extremely messy, a file's label color can't even be changed in Macintosh Explorer. Icons in the icon view can't even be dragged around. Preferences settings aren't applied until the application is reopened. The program is awfully slow, and the toolbar isn't even customizable. Info dialogs don't have file previews, and the column view is missing. In Macintosh Explorer I can't even change a file's permissions. Very poor program with hardly any features, to say that this is meant to be better than the Finder makes me laugh.

This software is a great improvement over the standard methods of file management offered by the Mac OS.

Managing a large number of files is made easier with a batch rename feature. This makes it easier to transfer files to a server via FTP or SCP connections. Remote connections of various types are also supported. There is also an internal viewer which makes it possible to view binary files. Proprietary QuickLook technology is included to allow for faster viewing of files. There is also an advanced search feature which comes in handy when the user wants to find files that have not been indexed by Spotlight. This lets the user work with a number of files at the same time. It is also possible to open several tabs in each pane. Using the standard function keys, users can move, copy, delete, and edit files. Everything can be accessed with the keyboard, so there is no need to fuss with a mouse when looking for important files. It lets users view a large number of archives including ZIP, JAR, EAR, and WAR files in one convenient window. There is also the ability to create a large number of hotkeys which make the process of file management more streamlined.ĭCommander uses a simple, dual-pane system. DCommander is a third-party advanced file manager that can be customized to a user's precise needs.

Overall Opinion: Efficient file management has always been an issue for Mac users.
